Austin, Texas has earned its reputation as one of the most talked-about cities in America — and for good reason. But before you pack up your life and head to Central Texas, there are a few things worth knowing upfront. Having lived here for nearly 20 years, I can give you the real picture: the good, the hot (literally), and everything in between.
Where Is Austin, Texas?
Austin sits right in the heart of Central Texas, nestled at the edge of the Hill Country. The rolling terrain, scenic views, and green landscape give Austin a character that's hard to find in other major Texas cities. It's not flat prairie — it's dramatic, beautiful, and alive.
Austin Is the Live Music Capital of the World (And It Means It)
Austin didn't just claim this title — it earned it. Whether you're heading downtown or exploring restaurants north and south of the city center, live music is woven into the fabric of daily life here. Local artists play in restaurants, on patios, and across the city's many venues, creating a warmth and energy that's unlike anywhere else. Date night, family dinner, or a casual evening out — the soundtrack is always there.
How Big Is Austin?
Austin is no longer the "small city" longtime locals like to remember. Just under one million people now call Austin home, placing it firmly among the largest cities in Texas alongside Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. It ranks as the fourth-largest city in the state — and it continues to grow. That growth has shaped everything from the housing market to traffic patterns to the restaurant scene, so it's important to come in with accurate expectations.
Austin Weather: Beautiful Sunshine, Serious Heat
Let's be honest about the summer. It is hot. Stretches of 100°F days are not unusual in July, and the heat lingers well into fall. But here's the thing — Austin also delivers more than 200 days of sunshine per year, and that sunshine fuels an outdoor lifestyle that most people fall in love with quickly.
What you can do even in the heat:
- Swim at Barton Springs Pool, one of Austin's most beloved natural swimming holes
- Hike the city's extensive trail systems early in the morning
- Barbecue and entertain outdoors in the evenings when temperatures drop
- Enjoy patios and green spaces across the city
As for severe weather — tornadoes are not a major concern in Austin proper. What you're more likely to encounter are thunderstorms, particularly in spring. Some of those storms can produce hail, so it's worth being aware, but it's not a year-round worry.
Austin Housing Market: What Does It Actually Cost?
The median home price in Austin is approximately $588,000 — and yes, that's still a significant investment. But context matters here.
During the pandemic-era housing boom, Austin became genuinely unaffordable for many buyers. Bidding wars were fierce, cash offers dominated, and even well-qualified buyers were getting shut out of the market repeatedly. That era has shifted.
Here's what the current market looks like:
- Median home prices have decreased from their peak highs
- Resale inventory has grown, giving buyers real options
- New construction homes are available across the metro, with inventory homes ready to move on right now
- Competitive bidding still exists on select properties, but it's no longer the default experience
Affordability is relative — it depends on what you're looking for and where. But the opportunity to find a home at a fair price in the Austin area is far more realistic today than it was in 2021 or 2022.
Austin's Food Scene: Local Is the Word
Austin has all the national chains you'd expect, but what makes the city's food culture special is the local spots. A few worth knowing:
- Honest Mary's — Fresh, natural, locally-sourced bowls that have built a serious following. Worth driving across town for.
- Sugar Pine — A small local gem serving inari (a Japanese sushi wrap) that's as unique as it is delicious. Support local, and this one is worth finding.
The food scene extends well beyond these two, of course — from legendary barbecue to globally-inspired restaurants — but the local-first mentality is very much alive here.
Nightlife and Family Life: Austin Handles Both
One of Austin's most underrated qualities is how well it serves different seasons of life — sometimes at the same time.
For nights out:
Downtown Austin is the epicenter. Walk the strip, hop between local bars and restaurants, catch live music, and soak in the culture. It's vibrant without being overwhelming, and it's distinctly Austin.
For families:
Austin is genuinely family-friendly, and the options keep growing:
- Parks and trails throughout the city and surrounding suburbs offer hiking, picnicking, and open space
- The Domain (North Burnet) is a shopping and dining hub that also features a turf green space where kids can play while parents relax on the patio
- Museums downtown, including the Blanton Museum of Art and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, offer cultural enrichment for all ages
- Public libraries across the metro provide free programming and community resources
Why Austin Still Makes the List
After nearly 20 years in Austin, having grown up in a military family that moved constantly, Austin is the city where I chose to plant roots and raise my family. It's laid-back but dynamic. It's weird in the best possible way. It can handle family life — parks, museums, safe neighborhoods, good schools — and it can handle date nights and evenings downtown without making you feel like you have to choose.
The suburbs around Austin, from Cedar Park to communities further out, offer the breathing room that families often need without losing access to everything the city offers. That balance is rare, and it's a big part of why people keep choosing Austin.
