Georgetown vs. Round Rock: Which Austin Suburb Is Right for You?

January 22, 2023Updated August 24, 20266 min readWatch Video

If you're looking to settle down near Austin without living right in the middle of it all, Georgetown and Round Rock are two names that come up again and again — and for good reason. Both cities sit in Williamson County just north of Austin, their borders literally touching, and both offer strong schools, plenty of amenities, and a real sense of community. But they're not the same city, and the differences matter depending on what you're looking for in a home base.

Let's break down what makes each city unique so you can make a more informed decision.

The Basics: Size, Feel, and Location

Georgetown and Round Rock are roughly 10-plus miles apart depending on where you're traveling from, and both are easily accessible from Austin via I-35.

Georgetown is the smaller of the two, with a population of around 75,000. It has a small-town, community feel anchored by a historic downtown that's been recognized as the most beautiful Town Square in all of Texas. There's plenty of green space, a slower pace, and a charm that's hard to replicate.

Round Rock is considerably larger, with a population of over 120,000. It has more of an urban energy — an expanding downtown that's blending modern features with original architecture, a wider variety of dining and entertainment, and the kind of infrastructure you'd expect from a fast-growing city.

If you're someone who craves that walkable, historic small-town atmosphere, Georgetown is going to speak to you. If you want more of a city-adjacent feel with greater density of options, Round Rock is worth a serious look.

Weather: Hot, and Then Some

Let's be honest — both cities share the same central Texas heat. Summers are long, and light clothing and AC become a lifestyle. But both cities have their ways of keeping residents cool.

  • Georgetown has Lake Georgetown and Blue Hole, two beloved local spots for cooling off during the hottest months.
  • Round Rock boasts Kalahari Resorts — the largest indoor water park in the nation — as well as Rockin' River Water Park.

Neither city has an edge here from a climate standpoint, but Round Rock's water park options are hard to beat for families with kids.

Things to Do

Georgetown

Georgetown's charm is rooted in its history and its square. Some highlights:

  • Williamson County Courthouse — a stunning centerpiece of the historic downtown
  • Georgetown Palace Theatre — live performances in a beautiful historic venue
  • The Square — unique local shops, boutiques like Pink Poppy, and restaurants including Sweet Lemon Kitchen and 600 Degrees
  • Inner Space Cavern — one of the best-preserved caves in Texas, a genuinely cool experience for families
  • Challenge Course — a teamwork-based obstacle experience on the ground and in the air
  • Southwestern University — a beautiful campus worth exploring, along with guided walking tours of the historic district

Georgetown's activity scene leans into its history, nature, and local character. It's the kind of place where weekends feel relaxed and intentional.

Round Rock

Round Rock's entertainment options are broader and a bit more fast-paced:

  • Chisholm Trail Crossing Park — home to the actual round limestone rock that gave the city its name
  • Dell Diamond — catch a Round Rock Express minor league baseball game
  • Flix Brewhouse — a movie theater where you can order food and drinks from your seat
  • Round Rock Premium Outlets — one of the best shopping destinations in the region
  • Brushy Creek Regional Trail — miles of walking and biking trails through the Brushy Creek neighborhood area

Round Rock delivers on variety. Whether it's a night out, a shopping trip, or an active afternoon outdoors, there's consistently something to do.

Cost of Living and Home Prices

As of October 2022, here's how the two cities compared on median home prices:

City Median Home Price Georgetown $465,000 Round Rock $438,700

Round Rock comes in at a lower price point, which can make a meaningful difference for buyers working with a specific budget. Georgetown's slightly higher prices reflect the premium many buyers place on that small-town character and the amenities that come with its established neighborhoods.

If affordability is your top priority, Round Rock is the more budget-friendly choice. If you're willing to stretch for a different quality of life, Georgetown may be worth the difference.

Schools: Georgetown ISD vs. Round Rock ISD

Both cities are served by strong school districts, and this is often the deciding factor for families with children.

Georgetown ISD

  • Enrolls more than 13,000 students across 17 schools
  • Graduation rate: 95.5%
  • Lower student-to-teacher ratio than many comparable districts
  • Spends 20.7% more per student than Round Rock ISD
  • Wide range of academic programs and extracurricular activities

Round Rock ISD

  • One of the most recognized school districts in Texas
  • Includes 35 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, 7 high schools, and 3 alternative schools
  • Graduation rate: 96.2%
  • Offers specialized programs including the IB (International Baccalaureate) program and arts academies
  • Also served by charter schools and magnet schools within the district

Historically, Round Rock ISD has carried a stronger reputation and higher ratings — but Georgetown ISD is no slouch. Its per-pupil spending and lower class sizes are real advantages worth considering, especially for families who want more individualized attention for their students.

So Which City Wins?

Honestly? There isn't a clear winner — it comes down to what matters most to you.

Choose Georgetown if you:

  • Want a smaller, close-knit community with a historic, walkable downtown
  • Value green space, natural attractions, and a slower pace of life
  • Don't mind spending a bit more for that neighborhood character
  • Prefer a school district with strong per-student investment and smaller class sizes

Choose Round Rock if you:

  • Want more entertainment, shopping, and dining options at your fingertips
  • Are prioritizing a lower median home price
  • Have children who would benefit from Round Rock ISD's specialized academic programs
  • Want an urban-adjacent feel with room to grow

Both Georgetown and Round Rock are genuinely excellent places to live, work, and raise a family. They're close enough to Austin to enjoy what the city offers, but established enough to stand entirely on their own.
